Thin Client

Thin client is a technology where several desktops are connected to a server and rely on the server's resources to perform simultaneous data processing. Because the connected desktops are utilizing the server's resources, it is not necessary for every desktop to be highly powered.

Thin clients have longer lifespan than standard computers and generally require lower maintenance due to centralized IT management function (e.g. software updates, virus scanning and patches need to be applied on the server only). Deployment costs can also be greatly reduced as thin clients can be remotely configured with less effort.

In essence, businesses should consider implementing thin clients in their IT environment for following benefits:

  • Quick initial installation and upgrades
  • Reduced desktop replacement costs
  • Reduced maintenance costs on desktops
  • Enhanced network security
  • Enhanced data availability
  • Enable greater access to applications on virtually any IT platform
  • Encourages use of a common application or software in a controlled IT environment
  • More scalable to meet rapidly growing business needs than with an IT architecture based on conventional PCs
